5-Stage RO System: Stages of Reverse Osmosis
Water is purified through a 5-stage filtration process, leaving you with quality water to drink – without the need to install a water softener system. Here’s how the RO system’s filtration steps work:
- Stage 1: Sediment Filtration for removing large and fine particles
- Stage 2: Activated Carbon Filtration for removing negative ions and chlorine
- Stage 3: Block Carbon Filtration for chlorine reduction
- Stage 4: Reverse Osmosis Membrane Filtration for the removal of dissolved solids
- Stage 5: Polishing Carbon Filtration for the final refinement of water
Stage 1 – Sediment Water Filter Cartridge
The 5-Micron, 10” x 2.5” Sediment Water Filter Cartridge is made of fine melted polypropylene, which is blown and spun in a cylinder-like form. The main function of the sediment pre-filter is to remove large and fine particles from drinking water, such as sand, dirt, silt, and rust particles. The filter offers excellent chemical resistance and has a high dirt-holding capacity. The sediment filter is melt-blown with thermally bonded, 100% pure polypropylene microfibers. Constructed entirely of food-grade materials, this sediment water filter contains no leachables.

Stage 2 – Granular Activated Carbon Water Filter Cartridge
The 10” x 2.5” Granular Activated Carbon Water Filter Cartridge (GAC) is made of a highly porous absorbent material produced by heating organic matter, such as coal, wood, and coconut shell, in the absence of air, which is then crushed into granules. Activated carbon is positively charged and is, therefore, able to remove negative ions from the water, such as ozone, chlorine, fluorides, and dissolved organic solutes by absorption into activated carbon.
Made from NSF Certified Coconut Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), this filter removes and reduces the taste and odor of chlorine from your drinking water. These water systems meet FDA requirements for food and beverage contact and have exceptional filtration and absorption of liquid chemicals.

Stage 3 – Five Micron Carbon Block Water Filter Cartridge
The Vita Bravo’s 10” X 2.5” Activated Carbon Block Filter Cartridge is a blend of fine activated carbon, water, and a suitable binder that is mixed and molded, then hardened or extruded to a cartridge filter of any size and shape.
The carbon block is made of fine coconut shell removing chlorine, odors, and tastes of many organic compounds. At the same time, it offers a much finer filtration of suspended particles and dirt. The carbon filter is used primarily in under sink water filter systems to reduce the bad taste and odor of chlorine, as well as many common impurities such as sediment, dirt, turbidity, limescale, rust, sand, silt, and more.
The water filter uses advanced coconut carbon filtration technology to maximize carbon capacity, prevent channeling, and maintain a low-pressure drop for more efficient water filtration.

Stage 4 – Reverse Osmosis DOW Filmtec Membrane
The industry’s most reliable drinking water for the home uses DOW Filmtec reverse osmosis membrane elements. Filmtec’s advanced RO membrane technology and the automated manufacturing of reverse osmosis membranes enable these elements to provide consistent performance for all customers.
The membranes are manufactured by modern, automated equipment certified by ISO-9001-2000. These semi-permeable membranes effectively reduce TDS and sodium, as well as a wide range of contaminants such as many heavy metals and protozoa cysts (such as Guardia and Cryptosporidium). The heart of your reverse osmosis system reduces the saturation of impurities to 1/10,000 microns.

The integrated 10” x 2” post-carbon filter is known as a polishing filter because it is the last step in a standard reverse osmosis scheme. The post-filter is made from high quality activated carbon based on coconut shells. It stabilizes the taste of drinking water and further removes any traces of unpleasant taste and odors. This RO filter is attached to the membrane body and filters the water after the bladder reservoir, acting as a polishing filter.

How Does A Five Stage Reverse Osmosis Filter System Work?
We’ve already run you through each stage of the Vita Bravo Five-Stage Reverse Osmosis Filter System, but let’s take a step back and look at the bigger picture. When there is a number, such as four or five, in the name of a water filtration system, that refers to the number of steps in the filtration process – or how many components the water supply is run through. For every five-stage RO system, you’ll see these general stages:
- Step 1: Water runs through a pre-filter, which removes large solids. This stage is crucial because it keeps the other filters from getting clogged up with debris. This will ultimately extend the life of your system.
- Step 2+3: During steps two and three, chlorine is removed from the water in two stages. These steps use the RO membrane and the carbon filters to do so.
- Step 4: In this step, membranes remove chemicals such as lead, fluoride, and chromium.
- Step 5: And, lastly, in Step 5, the water leaves the storage tank and passes through a post-filtration membrane on the way to the faucet. This will get rid of any particles that could have built up on the inside of the tank. And now you have clean, delicious water flowing through your tap, without sacrificing water pressure.
Installation of the Vita Bravo 5-Stage Reverse Osmosis System
Are you ready to install your RO system? If you are worried about doing it yourself, don’t fear! Our experts at High Water Standard can handle every aspect of the 5-stage Reverse Osmosis System installation. We provide our services to all five New York City boroughs, as well as to North New Jersey and Long Island.
If you are set on doing the installation on your own, we have some tips to make the process go more smoothly. Be sure to thoroughly read the instruction manual that comes with your RO system.
Tip 1: Only connect the system to your cold water line. Connecting it to your hot water line will quickly degrade your RO system.
Tip 2: When installing filter housings, handle them with the utmost caution. Avoid bumping, scratching, or dropping them.
Tip 3: When installing the Vita Bravo tank (which can process 50 gallons of water per day), be sure to place it within ten feet of your sink’s faucet. When the tank is full, it can be quite heavy – so make sure that any shelving used is stable.
Tip 4: After installing your system, check the water flow. If there is no water, or if it flows at a very slow rate, check to make sure that your tank pressure is between 5 – 7 psi and that your system is hooked up correctly.
